Gift Banda, a 54-year-old aspiring ZIFA vice president, was arrested yesterday for allegedly forging an Ordinary Level certificate. Banda, a former Bulawayo councillor and deputy mayor, spent the night at Western Commonage Police Station assisting police with investigations. He was arrested alongside Anele Zikhali of Bulawayo, who allegedly produced the fake certificate.
The arrest stems from Banda’s intention to file papers for the ZIFA elections. According to ZIFA’s constitution, candidates must hold five Ordinary Level passes, which Banda is believed to lack. Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that Banda was being held on allegations of forgery.
The forged certificate claims Banda passed Zimbabwe School Examinations Council tests in 1986 at Mpopoma High School in Bulawayo. However, Commissioner Nyathi pointed out that Mpopoma High School offered Cambridge examinations in 1986, and Zimsec was not established until 1996. Further details are expected soon.
