Zimbabwean Arrested for Stealing Nelson Mandela’s Grandson’s R4 Million Car
A 42-year-old Zimbabwean man has been arrested in South Africa for allegedly stealing a car worth R4 million from Nelson Mandela’s grandson and Member of Parliament, Mandla Mandela.
How Zimbabwean Stole Car Belonging to Mandla Mandela
The Zimbabwean allegedly stole the vehicle on Thursday afternoon, August 7, 2024, from a parking lot at Menlyn Mall in Pretoria. The car was on its way to being smuggled into Zimbabwe when the South African Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Anti-Smuggling Task Team caught him later that evening in the Lebowakgomo area near Polokwane.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the swift and effective response of the task team in capturing the suspect and recovering the stolen vehicle.

Additional Charges For Zimbabwean Arrested for Stealing Mandla Mandela’s Car
The 42-year-old Zimbabwean national has been charged with possession of a presumed stolen motor vehicle. To add to his troubles, the Zimbabwean man was also charged with contravention of the Immigration Act after it was established that he was in South Africa illegally. He is expected to appear before Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on August 12.

Mzansi Reacts Following Zimbabwean’s Arrest
While the SAPS did not mention the owner of the stolen vehicle, South Africans were quick to identify it as belonging to Mandla Mandela. Some commentators commended the police for their action, with some suggesting the suspect should have been shot. Others, however, raised concerns about a member of parliament owning such an expensive car, calling for an investigation by the Hawks. Here are some of the reactions:
