Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi, fresh from his impressive run on America’s Got Talent (AGT), recently opened up about a poignant chapter of his life on DJ Ollah 7’s YouTube podcast. Jonasi, who headlined the 2024 Shoko Festival, shared the heart-wrenching story of his father’s rejection during his mother’s pregnancy. Despite this painful experience, Jonasi’s grandparents stepped in, providing love and support that would shape his future.
Jonasi’s grandfather, Mr. Manyenyeka, took on the responsibility of raising him, declaring, “Muzukuru wangu uyu, mwana wangu. He will eat what I eat and sleep where I sleep.” This selfless act had a profound impact on Jonasi, who has since adopted his grandfather’s surname, Mwanyenyeka, as a tribute. With forgiveness in his heart, Jonasi reflected on his childhood, acknowledging that his father’s absence no longer defines him. Instead, he credits his grandfather’s influence for his success, stating, “If I weren’t raised by my grandfather, I wouldn’t be a comedian today.”
Growing up in Chimanimani, Jonasi discovered his passion for comedy through his grandfather, who loved watching comedy shows. This shared experience sparked Jonasi’s desire to bring joy to others, and he began mimicking what he saw. Today, Jonasi’s unique brand of humor has captivated audiences globally, demonstrating the transformative power of laughter.
