Kudzanai Hiya, a seasoned Zimbabwean referee, has been slapped with a five-year ban from all football-related activities and a substantial fine of $116,650. The disciplinary action follows his conviction on charges of match manipulation and corruption. Hiya, who had 14 years of experience as a senior assistant referee, was found guilty of accepting a $400 bribe from a Dynamos supporter to influence the outcome of a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Herentals and Dynamos.

The incident occurred on May 12 at Rufaro Stadium, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Despite Hiya’s denials, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Florence Jambwa, found him guilty after a full trial. The committee considered Hiya’s lengthy service as an aggravating factor, noting that he should have known better than to engage in corrupt practices.

The severe penalty reflects ZIFA’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the sport and addressing misconduct. The fine and ban serve as a deterrent to other officials, ensuring a level playing field and preventing external influences from compromising the game.
