Zimbabweans Infuriated After Chitungwiza Man Faces Murder Charge For Killing Intruder

Zimbabweans have been left angry after  Chitungwiza man faces a murder charge for killing an intruder who threatened his life with a knife.

A 22-year-old man from Chitungwiza, identified as Benson Macharangwanda, has been charged with murder following a confrontation with an alleged intruder. The incident reportedly occurred during the early hours of December 2 at around 4:30 AM.According to court proceedings held in Harare on Monday, Macharangwanda was remanded in custody pending a High Court indictment. The confrontation allegedly unfolded after an anti-theft alarm on Macharangwanda’s phone was triggered, waking him from sleep.

The intruder reportedly claimed that the phone had fallen inside his room. Macharangwanda accompanied the man to retrieve the device, but tensions escalated into a physical altercation. During the scuffle, the intruder allegedly brandished a knife and attempted to stab Macharangwanda.

Fortunately, the accused managed to block the knife attack, reportedly alerted by his landlady, who shouted to warn him. Amid the struggle, Macharangwanda was able to recover his phone from the intruder’s clothing. Subsequently, the burglar was escorted off the premises.
Once outside, the intruder began complaining about injuries sustained during the confrontation. Family members later transported him to Chitungwiza Hospital for medical attention. Tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Legal Proceedings

The National Prosecuting Authority is handling the case, alleging that Macharangwanda’s actions during the altercation contributed to the intruder’s death. The matter is now set to proceed to the High Court for further review and determination.

As the case develops, it raises critical questions about self-defense and the legal boundaries of protecting one’s property. Updates on the trial are anticipated in the coming weeks.
