Zimbabwe Records Alarming 47 Murder Cases Over Christmas Period
Zimbabwean police have reported an alarming 47 murder cases during the Christmas holiday period. The week-long crime spree, spanning from 20 to 26 December 2024, highlights a surge in violence across the country, according to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
“We are concerned with the number of murder cases which are being recorded throughout the country,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He explained that the killings were driven by disputes at beer-drinking gatherings, sporting events, family conflicts, and even arguments over relationships.
Shocking Family Tragedy in Harare
One of the most shocking incidents occurred in Kuwadzana 7, Harare, on Boxing Day. A 22-year-old man, Nihipalakar Muyaya, allegedly assaulted his 70-year-old grandmother, Agnes Duri, after she refused to give him a Christmas present.
“The victim was later found lying lifeless in her room with blood coming out of her mouth and ears,” said Nyathi. He added, “The suspect was subsequently arrested.”
This heartbreaking case has left the local community reeling. Police continue to urge families to handle disputes calmly during gatherings.
Beer-Related Disputes Turn Deadly
Several other murders stemmed from fights at beer-drinking gatherings. In Mwenezi, Triangle, a Christmas Day argument between Mastard Chauke, 22, and Tongai Moyo ended tragically. An innocent bystander, 29-year-old Ostern Mangaru, was struck by a stone intended for Chauke.
“The victim fell on the ground and died on the spot,” Nyathi confirmed.
In Shurugwi, a pool game dispute led to violence. Learnmore Mudzengi, 36, allegedly stabbed Sydney Mudzengi, 21, with a Columbian knife. The disagreement reportedly arose over a missing token. Sydney was pronounced dead at the scene.
Community Urged to Promote Peace
In another case, 23-year-old Polite Nyauro was found lifeless at Chipfuvamiti Primary School in Makonde. He had been missing since attending a Christmas Day beer drink with his brothers.
Police are calling on community leaders to encourage peaceful conflict resolution. Commissioner Nyathi emphasised, “The church, traditional leaders, and the general community are implored to come on board to ensure the public respect the sanctity of human life.”
Police are stepping up community engagement to foster a culture of law-abiding citizens.
