The ZRP in Bulawayo intercepted a gathering of 38 minors involved in a Vuzu party held in Pumula South last Friday.
Following a tip-off from alert neighbours, police arrived at the scene and discovered minors in possession of alcohol and condoms. Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the deputy spokesperson for Bulawayo provincial police, confirmed that the gathering included students from various schools across the city, some even from affluent neighbourhoods.
“We received credible information leading to the arrest of 38 minors, students from schools such as COH&H College, Foundation College, Educare College, St Bernard’s School, Northlea High School, Zim College, and Beacon of Life, as well as a few school leavers. They were attending a Vuzu party at a house located at number 22614 in Pumula South.”

Concerns Over the Role of Social Media in Organising Vuzu Parties
The ease with which social media platforms facilitate the coordination of such events has become a growing concern for parents and law enforcement alike. These digital spaces allow minors to discreetly communicate and plan illegal gatherings, making it difficult for parents to monitor their children’s activities.
“Social media has made it far easier for young people to organise these Vuzu parties without the knowledge of their parents. The lack of supervision in these settings is very troubling.”
Alcohol and Other Substances Found At The Vuzu Party
The police operation occurred on the 11th of October 2024, at approximately 1 PM, when they were alerted to the party. Upon searching the house and its occupants, authorities found unused condoms, two 750ml bottles of White Stone Vodka, 15 litres of Fourth Street wine, and even a bottle of glue.
When questioned, the minors claimed they were attending a birthday party, although they admitted that their parents were unaware of the gathering. The identity of the homeowner is still under investigation.
After their apprehension, the police released the minors into the custody of their parents. They were also referred to Mpilo Hospital for medical examinations to ensure their well-being.
