Police Slam “Fake News” Claims Ahead of SADC Summit, Warn Social Media Users
As the 44th Ordinary Session of the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit takes place, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning against the spread of “fake news” on social media. The ZRP assured the public that the security situation remains peaceful and urged citizens to continue their daily activities without fear.
No Accident, No Clash
Rumours of a road traffic accident involving an escort motorbike or a clash between the police and the public in Harare have been circulating online.
The ZRP has categorically dismissed these claims. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police dismisses social media postings alleging that there has been a road traffic accident involving an escort motorbike or clash between the Police and public in Harare,” stated Commissioner Nyathi, the national spokesperson for the ZRP.
The ZRP emphasised that these reports are false and urged the public not to be misled by such misinformation. The ongoing summit, which has attracted regional leaders and dignitaries, has heightened security across the capital, but authorities maintain that there have been no incidents of concern.
Warning to Social Media Users
In light of the spread of these false reports, the ZRP has issued a strong warning to those who misuse social media platforms.
“The Police warn those using the social media platforms to send false or fake news that the law will take its course without fear or favour as investigations unfold,” Commissioner Nyathi continued.
The police have made it clear that they will not tolerate the dissemination of fake news, especially during such a significant event.
“The law will take its course without fear or favour,” the Commissioner reiterated, highlighting the seriousness with which the authorities are approaching the issue.
