Popular South African actress Brenda Ngxoli has revealed that she has dumped her ancestral calling and is, therefore, no longer practicing as a sangoma.
The former The River actress announced in an X post on Thursday, 11 April, that she has dumped her ancestral calling for the Christian faith. The actress said that the birth of her two-year-old daughter, Sky Ngxoli, helped her understand that she was on the wrong path.
Thank you @Sky_Ngxoli. Your arrival has opened my eyes and heart to what is mine and what should be left for others to enjoy. Sangomahood is just not for me. I don’t judge but good Lord knows I was never meant to entertain it,” Ngxoli wrote.
The former The Queen actress accepted her spiritual calling in 2013. In an X post seven years later, she opened up about being judged for being a sangoma.
“7 years ago I heeded, accepted, and surrendered to the calling of my beloved ancestors. With God firmly by my side… what an exhilaratingly challenging journey of self-discovery and acceptance it has been. One I would never trade for anything in the world. #Camagu&Proud.” she said.
“My Beloved Xhosa kingdom, family, and village supported & accepted me immensely. It’s when I reached the cities that I was faced with judgements, social media expects telling me I was following fashion trends. But I stood against the wind knowing many supported and understood. Ta [sic].”
Ngxoli joins fellow thespians Palesa Madisakwane and Thabiso Mokhethi who turned to Christianity after many years as sangomas.
In November last year, Madisakwane (who is Somizi’s baby mama) took to social media to share a video of herself shredding and burning her ancestral clothes as a symbol of her turning away from the spiritual practice.
Two months before Madisakwane’s announcement, Mokhethi took to his social media accounts to reveal that he had “resigned” from being a sangoma.
“I am resigning from all things from a lifestyle that many of us are suffering from, partying. Most of all, I am resigning from being a sangoma. I am resigning from consulting the Sangoma Way.
The former Generations actor continued: “I am resigning from the bonds I entered into when I was seeking healing, I will no longer serve as a sangoma, I will only serve as a teacher of the word, as one who chooses this word that has chosen him, and I will allow the word to. There’s nothing for me out there. Only God. My spirit says I was lost but now I am found.”
