Former United States president Donald Trump‘s highly-anticipated “hush money” trial commenced on Monday amidst an atmosphere of drama and uncertainty.
Although the day ended without any jurors being impaneled, further delaying the already complicated proceedings, the former president learned that he might miss out on his youngest son Barron’s graduation.
According to The List, Barron, Trump’s son whom he shares with his wife Melania, is set to graduate from Oxbridge Academy, his private high school near Mar-a-Lago, on May 17.
Trump’s attorneys on Monday requested the court be adjourned that day so that the 2024 Republican presidential candidate can attend his son’s graduation ceremony. However, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan gave an ambiguous response, stating it that it would depend on the progress of the trial.
Trump interpreted Merchan’s response as a refusal, and voiced his displesure to the press after court adjourned for the day. It looks like the judge will not let me go to the graduation of my son who’s worked very, very hard,” Trump said.
“He’s a great student and he’s very proud of the fact he did so well and was looking forward for years to having his graduation with his mother and father there, and it looks like the judge isn’t going to allow me to escape this scam. It’s a scam trial.” Trump continued blasting his hush money trial as a calculated move to thwart his third presidential campaign.
“That I can’t go to my son’s graduation, that I can’t go to the US Supreme Court, that I’m not in Georgia or Florida or North Carolina campaigning like I should be…it’s perfect for the radical-left Democrats,” he said. There’s always the chance Trump could be there for his son’s university commencement.
