Families of workers trapped in George building collapse still waiting for answers from developer

Families waiting for answers at the site of a building collapse in George say they’ve been left in the lurch by the building developer.

The George Municipality said that Neo Trend Group Ice Projects was given approval to build the apartment block in July.

However, after the five-storey building caved in with 75 artisans on site on Monday, their relatives say the developer has given them the cold shoulder.

Six workers have died and 47 remain trapped under the rubble.

Bright Kayuni said that his niece took up a job at the construction site for the first time on Saturday.

She was among the 75 workers laying the finishing touches to the apartment block when the structure collapsed.

Kayuni has been camping out at the nearby municipal hall since news broke of the incident.

More than 24 hours later, the Kayuni family is still in the dark.

“We don’t know. We don’t know what is happening. They can’t give us a full report.”

The Western Cape government has appointed a structural engineering firm, V3, to determine what caused the collapse and who is responsible.

The company’s Casper Hutten spent the afternoon on site.

“We’ve been to site and taken a lot of photos. It’s a major disaster but it’s much too early to make any comments on what has happened.”

Search and rescue workers are expected to spend the rest of the week scouring the ruins of what would have been a 42-unit block of flats.

The publication has tried to reach the developers for comment, but a spokesperson has not yet been available.
