First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa Orders The ZRP To Withdraw Charges Against The Women Who Booed Her In Watsomba

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa has ordered the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to withdraw charges against the nine women who booed her in Watsomba last week.

“Public Disorder!”

On 10 April, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) arrested and charged nine women who allegedly booed First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa during her address at Watsomba Business Centre. The women reportedly failed to access freebies she dished out as part of her charitable work.

The women are Nester Chatiwana (41), Panashe Machekanzondo (19), Winnet Sithole (19), Maria Choto (49), Esnath Choto (33), Ellen Rujuwa (28), Faith Chidhakwa (30), Patience Matasva (35) and Joyce Mashingaidza (29).

The ZRP detained the women at Mutare Central Police Station before charging them with disorderly conduct in a public place as defined in section 41(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Prosecutors told the Mutare Magistrate Prisca Manhibi that the nine stood up and disrupted Auxillia’s speech by booing her to grumble for not receiving groceries and clothes she was donating to people. They added that the women’s behaviour was unlawful, abusive and insulting to Auxillia Mnangagwa.

The women argued that the Police targeted them for leaving the venue early while the First Lady was still speaking.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) represented the women, who were released last Friday on free bail. They  will return to court on 30 April.

Through his X account @dhonzamusoro007, Charamba disclosed that the charges against the women have been withdrawn:

“NIL-BRAINER: Both the First Lady and Police Commissioner General agreed the officers on the ground overreacted. On the instructions of the First Lady, all charges were withdrawn yesterday. @PoliceZimbabwe.”
