Gauteng Education Dept calls for probe into value system at Curro Holdings after viral racism row

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is calling for an investigation into the value system of Curro Holdings.

The department remains concerned over racial incidents that have reportedly played out at the group’s schools over the years.

The call follows a recent social media post from Curro, depicting the future of learners at its schools.

In the post – which has since been edited – a white pupil is seen pursuing a prestigious career as a vet, while a black learner takes on the job of a cashier.

The depiction sent shockwaves on social media platforms and sparked conversations about inherent racism in South Africa.

Curro has since acknowledged that its post was offensive.

“The department does not take such racial incidents lightly, as they may cultivate attitudes – which reflect a society that has not fully dealt with racism and as such, it poses a threat not only to the education system but to the modern citizens,” said GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona.
