Jazz legend Alvin Dyers remembered for nurturing SA talent

Cape Town jazz legend Alvin Dyers will be remembered for nurturing young talent and passing on his musical knowledge to the younger generation. The funeral service of the jazz icon was held in Cape Town at the St George’s Cathedral.

He passed away last weekend at the age of 70. Dyers was a legendary figure in the Cape Jazz movement, a recording artist, educator, and composer. Lifelong friend and fellow musician Joe Schaffers says Dyers inspired aspiring artists.

“The man himself he was truly an icon in the city. I would not be exaggerating to say hundreds of students have gone through his hands starting what we call the jam sessions whereby various musicians could get together young and not so young. They could come along and try their skills on stage and he would always be there to guide them through.
