Wicknell Chivayo Mourns Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu

Flamboyant Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who passed away at the age of 68 while receiving treatment in South Africa.

Lungu, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, died in the early hours of Thursday, 5 June 2025. His passing has sparked tributes across the region, including from Chivayo, who shared a heartfelt eulogy on his X (formerly Twitter) account the following day.

Wicknell Chivayo Describes Edgar Lungu as One of Africa’s Greatest

Chivayo described Lungu as one of Zambia’s best leaders and a true African statesman. Posting a photo of himself smiling beside the late former president, he reflected on what he called an irreplaceable loss for Zambia and the continent.

“A DARK CLOUD engulfs our TWIN nation of Zambia and the rest of Africa, as we mourn the UNTIMELY and devastating loss of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. One of Africa’s greatest HEROES, Statesmen and arguably one of the BEST Presidents Zambia 🇿🇲 has ever had !!!!!. IT is with the deepest sorrow that we bid farewell to such a VISIONARY and LEADER PAR EXCELLENCE. He was a unifier who popularised the ‘ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION’ philosophy,” he wrote.

A Personal Connection with the Late President

Chivayo also recalled visiting Lungu at State House during his presidency, saying the former Zambian leader was passionate about empowering young African entrepreneurs. According to Chivayo, Lungu encouraged youth to lead Africa’s future and shared wisdom rooted in humility and prayer.

“Personally, I will FOREVER treasure the memory of my courtesy visit to him at State House. He spoke glowingly of how YOUNG African businessmen must take CHARGE, as they are Africa’s FUTURE. President Lungu was a fearless preacher of PEACE and a tireless advocate for JUSTICE and DEMOCRACY, and spoke his truth boldly,” he said.

Chivayo said the former Zambian leader shared powerful advice about life and humanity, rooted in love, humility, and prayer.

He gifted me with UNFORGETTABLE nuggets of wisdom that what defines HUMANITY is unconditional LOVE, HUMILITY and steadfast PRAYER. These are the sacred principles he lived by and which I hold onto until this DAY. You have left an INDELIBLE legacy of GREATNESS and true LEADERSHIP,” he added.

Chivayo Conveys His Condolences

Wrapping up his tribute, Chivayo sent his condolences to Lungu’s widow, Esther, their children, and the people of Zambia.

“To the former First Lady Mrs Esther Lungu, his beloved children and the entire family together with all our Zambian BROTHERS and SISTERS, our hearts and prayers are with you. May God’s infinite grace comfort you in this DIFFICULT time and may the soul of our AFRICAN HERO rest in ETERNAL PEACE 💔🕊💐,” he wrote.
