Man Jumps From 3rd Floor Moments After Receiving 15-Years for Attempted Rape
A man recently sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted rape tried to evade justice by leaping from the third floor of the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court. Monwabisi Mhilwane, 38, was found guilty of attempting to rape his cousin multiple times at their home in Inyathi, Matabeleland North Province. The sentence was handed down by Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Ms. Sibonginkosi Mnkandla.
Shortly after the verdict was announced, Mhilwane managed to break away from the guards and jumped from the building, apparently trying to escape his sentence. He survived the fall but sustained serious injuries. Eyewitnesses, including prosecutors and court staff, were left horrified as Mhilwane lay bloodied on the ground floor. Paramedics quickly arrived and rushed him to the hospital.
State prosecutor Mr. Jethro Mada detailed the serious nature of Mhilwane’s crimes, stating that he attempted to rape his 19-year-old cousin in February at their homestead. Mhilwane had repeatedly molested her and even threatened her in front of family members. The situation escalated when he was caught in the act.
Ms. Mnkandla emphasized the victim’s vulnerability and condemned Mhilwane for abusing his position as her uncle. Despite his claims of innocence, the evidence against him was overwhelming, leading to his conviction after a thorough trial.
According to Mr. Mada, on the day of the incident, Mhilwane propositioned the victim for sex, which she refused. After discussing the situation with her cousin sister, they attempted to resolve the issue informally. However, on March 30, while the victim was in her room, Mhilwane forcefully entered, assaulted her, and attempted to undress her. She cried out for help, leading to her cousin’s intervention.
In another incident on April 30, while the victim went to the bush, Mhilwane followed her and demanded sex. When she refused, he resorted to throwing stones at her, prompting her to report him to the police.
