Govt Begins Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road Upgrade as Road Closures Announced
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced the start of major upgrade works on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road, with the first phase kicking off on Monday, 14 July 2025.
In a statement released on Friday, 11 July, the Ministry said sections of the road will be temporarily closed, and traffic will be diverted through detours to allow critical rehabilitation work to begin.
Which Roads Will Be Closed For the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road Upgrade?
The statement warned motorists to prepare for changes as a section of the highway will be shut down between Bulawayo CBD and Livingstone Bridge.
“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development wishes to inform the public that starting Monday, 14 July 2025, traffic along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road will be diverted to designated detours to allow for essential rehabilitation and upgrading works. To facilitate construction, a temporary road closure will be in effect from Bulawayo CBD to Livingstone Bridge. beginning 14 July 2025 until 31 July 2026. The first phase of construction will focus on the section between Chainage 99.6km and 104.6km Hnsuza area,” the statement further reads.
Motorists were advised to reduce speed, follow temporary road signs, and cooperate fully for safety reasons. The Ministry also reminded the public that failure to follow instructions in construction zones is illegal and dangerous.
“We appreciate your cooperation during this critical infrastructure improvement project. Regular updates will be provided as works progress. Non-compliance with road closure signs or use of construction zone is illegal and dangerous. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to deliver these critical infrastructure improvements for our nation,” the statement concluded.

Over 2,000 Jobs Expected for Locals
According to a report by The Herald, the highway upgrade is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs, most of which will benefit people living along the 435km stretch.
This falls in line with the government’s inclusive development policy, which aims to ensure local communities benefit from national infrastructure projects.
The rehabilitation is being implemented under the National Roads Rehabilitation Programme. The government has awarded the contracts to five established firms: Fossil Contracting, Masimba Construction, Syvern Investments, Bitumen Resources, and Tensor Systems.
