Academic Fraud Exposed: High School Teacher Jailed For Writing ZIMSEC Maths Exams For 3 Students

Hwange High School Teacher Sentenced to 12 Months in Prison for Writing ZIMSEC Math Exams for 3 Students

In a shocking case of academic misconduct, a High School teacher from Hwange has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for writing a Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Mathematics examination on behalf of three Ordinary Level students.

The incident happened last year, and the teacher, identified as Mkululi Moyo, faced charges of unlawfully and intentionally sitting for the November 2023 Maths Paper 2 examination while impersonating 3 Hwange High School students.

According to the state’s case, Moyo had conspired with his accomplice, Mark Bhebhe, who was the invigilator at the time (and is currently at large). Moyo was given the written answer scripts by Bhebhe, which were then handed over to the three candidates. The students then entered their details on the answer scripts and submitted them as if they had been written themselves. As a reward for his participation, Moyo received US$150.

The illicit scheme came to light in December of the same year when Zimsec examiners noticed a discrepancy in the handwriting between the personal details section and the main body of the answer scripts.

Further investigations revealed that the candidates were from Hwange High School, leading the investigating team to visit the school on 22 March 2024. The answer scripts were shown to the headmaster, who confirmed that the handwriting on the scripts matched that of the accused teacher.

Mkululi Moyo was subsequently sentenced by the Hwange magistrates’ court to twelve months in jail, with four months of the sentence being suspended on certain conditions.
