Zimbabwean-Born Winger Tavonga Kuleya Quashes Simba Bhora Links with Surprise Move to Eighth-Tier English Club

Tavonga Kuleya, the UK-born winger with Zimbabwean roots, has ended speculation about a possible move to Simba Bhora after signing for a lower league English club last week.

Over the weekend, reports in Zimbabwe had suggested that Kuleya was close to sealing a deal with Simba Bhora, the reigning Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions. There were even claims that the Shamva-based team would soon unveil the 21-year-old.

However, it turns out Kuleya had already joined English eighth-tier side Belper Town a week earlier. The club competes in the Northern Premier League Division One and confirmed his signing in an official statement.

Belper Town said they were happy to bring him in permanently after he made a good impression during his loan spell from Doncaster Rovers last season.

“Belper Town are delighted to announce that Tavonga Kuleya has been signed on a permanent basis after impressing on loan from Doncaster Rovers last season. Tavonga chipped in with some important goals during his loan spell before suffering from a hamstring injury, and his release from Doncaster has enabled him to re-join the Nailers.”

Kuleya’s Football Journey in England

Kuleya, who was born in Bradford to Zimbabwean parents, had already spent some time in the English lower leagues. He joined Belper Town on loan from Doncaster Rovers last season before being released by Doncaster in June. This paved the way for his permanent transfer to Belper Town on a free deal.

Kuleya also had a short stint at Truro City, a sixth-tier club in England, before his departure from Doncaster.

Kuleya made his first senior appearance for Doncaster in 2021 while still an academy player, featuring in an EFL Trophy match against Scunthorpe United. He later signed professional terms with the club but struggled to break into the first team.

The winger was sent on multiple loan spells to non-league sides including FC United of Manchester, Marske United, Sheffield FC, Gainsborough Trinity, and Matlock Town.

Last season, Kuleya made just five league appearances for Doncaster, with his final game coming in a 3-0 victory over MK Dons on New Year’s Day.
