A Kwekwe businesswoman was arrested after a daring truck driver absconded with a substantial shipment of agricultural fertiliser belonging to George Charamba, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson.
The incident occurred last Friday while the valuable cargo was in transit to Charamba’s Battlefields farm near Kwekwe.
Driver Disappears With George Charamba’s Fertilizer
Court documents reveal that 49-year-old Sithabisile Mpofu now faces charges of theft of trust property following the mysterious disappearance of 26 metric tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertilizer.
The high-value agricultural input, worth approximately $17,160, vanished during what should have been a routine delivery from J & J in Mt Hampden to Charamba’s rural property.

According to prosecution statements, Mpofu allegedly coordinated the transportation after being contacted by Charamba’s personal assistant. The suspect reportedly arranged for truck driver Stewart Sanikwa to handle the July 11 shipment, but the planned delivery took an unexpected turn.
Security Protocol Breach
The court heard that established security measures failed when Gift Nyamutowa, an employee from the President’s Office assigned to escort the shipment, arrived late to the loading point. Prosecutors claim the missing driver exploited this security lapse, departing with both the truck and its valuable contents before the designated escort could arrive.
“When Nyamutowa eventually reached the farm, he made the alarming discovery that neither the truck nor the fertilizer had arrived at their intended destination,” stated representatives from the National Prosecuting Authority.
This prompted immediate police involvement.
False Information Allegations
Authorities have levelled additional accusations against Mpofu, claiming the suspect provided fraudulent registration details for the vehicle involved in the incident. This alleged deception has complicated efforts to locate the missing shipment.

While the prime suspect remains at large, Mpofu has been detained in custody as investigations continue. The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of the victim and the substantial value of the stolen agricultural inputs.
