Archbishop Thabo Makgoba warns against reduction of education budgets

Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, has warned that government’s decision to reduce education budgets in the midst of rising unemployment could spell disaster.

He has accused the national government of creating a funding crisis in education. This follows the Western Cape Education Department’s announcement that it plans to cut over 2 400 teacher posts next year due to budget shortfalls.

Speaking at the Anglican Church’s provincial Synod, the Archbishop highlighted the dire consequences of provinces throughout the country being forced to cut services like feeding and transporting learners.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has, meanwhile, attributed the crippling financial crisis in the education sector to “aggressive budget cuts, economic stagnation and fiscal mismanagement across government.
