ATM bombings: Husband & wife arrested with dye-stained cash

Husband & wife arrested with dye-stained cash linked to ATM bombings in Katlehong, Gauteng. The police apprehended the couple on Thursday after a tip-off led investigators to their location, where evidence of the dye-stained money was discovered.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and shared further details about the incident. According to Nevhuhulwi, law enforcement authorities received information regarding suspicious transactions involving dye-stained money that had been deposited into a specific account. This type of stained cash is often associated with stolen money from ATMs or other secured cash containers, as the ink dye is used to mark the currency during attempted thefts.

The account in question was traced back to a residence in Katlehong, where police found that it had been opened in the name of a foreign national woman who was renting on the premises. Further investigations led the police to her husband, who had been wanted in connection with other crimes, specifically related to ATM bombings.

“Preliminary investigations directed the police to the woman’s husband, who was already a wanted suspect for several cases involving ATM bombings,” explained Nevhuhulwi. As the investigation unfolded, police discovered that dye-stained cash was being kept at a salon owned by the woman. Both the woman and her husband were promptly arrested, and the tainted money was seized.

The couple is expected to make their court appearance soon, where they will face charges relating to their possession of the stolen, dye-stained cash, as well as the potential involvement in ATM bombings. The arrest is seen as a significant step in cracking down on ATM-related crimes, which have become more prevalent in certain areas of South Africa.

Police authorities used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to the public regarding dye-stained money. They urged citizens to avoid accepting or using any cash that is marked with dye, as it is likely linked to illegal activity and could make individuals suspects in a criminal investigation.

“ATMs hold cash in special containers that are designed to protect the money using dye-stain technology. When someone attempts to forcibly open these containers, the dye is activated, which stains the cash with green ink. This defacing of the currency renders the notes unusable,” the police statement clarified.

The police emphasized that any currency stained with ink has no monetary value and cannot be exchanged or used for legitimate transactions. The warning also pointed out that individuals found in possession of such stained notes could face legal consequences, as the possession of the defaced money raises suspicions about their involvement in the theft or unauthorised access to ATM containers.

“These stained notes are recognized as having no monetary value once they are stained, and anyone found with them may be linked to the criminal act of stealing or tampering with ATM containers,” the police statement added.

ATM bombings have been a growing concern in South Africa, particularly in regions like Gauteng. Criminal syndicates often target ATMs in an attempt to access the cash stored within, using explosives to break into the machines. The use of dye-stain technology has been a measure employed by banks to deter these kinds of attacks and to prevent stolen money from entering circulation.

The arrests of the Katlehong couple highlight the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat these crimes, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of modern security measures like dye-stain technology in tracking and recovering stolen funds.

Authorities continue to encourage the public to report any suspicious activity involving dye-stained cash and to avoid accepting or using such currency, as its possession could implicate individuals in serious criminal activities.
