Alick Macheso Worried As Sickness and Misfortunes Hit Veteran Band Members
Sungura legend Alick Macheso has opened up about the emotional toll of watching several of his Orchestra Mberikwazvo bandmates fall seriously ill, with some struggling to return to the stage that has defined their lives for years.
During a recent performance in Harare, Macheso took a moment to address the growing health challenges within his band. His tone shifted from entertainment to concern when dancer Selemani “Majuicy” Mpochi briefly walked on stage, his first public appearance in a month. Although the crowd erupted in joy, Macheso’s smile faded as he explained Majuicy’s condition.

Macheso gently strummed his guitar before telling fans that Majuicy was still too sick to dance, despite his presence. He said:
“Those who have been asking about Majuicy’s whereabouts, you have seen him. But he is not here to perform; he is still unwell, makumbo ake achiri akamubata, and the doctor said he should get enough rest. Hanzi mabhonzo haasi kuita zvakanaka.”
Guitarist Nyamunda Now Blind, But Still Performing
Macheso went on to talk about Tafi Nyamunda, one of his trusted guitarists, whose situation has deeply affected him. Nyamunda has completely lost his sight and now needs help with basic daily tasks. Despite that, he still plays with the band, guided by his fellow musicians on stage.
“This is now getting me worried, this is not only about Majuicy, we also Tafi Nyamunda, as you know, he has gone blind, aitomboona zvakanaka mufunge. It’s a sad situation and he now needs assistance kuita zvakawanda.”
Other Band Members Still Battling Illness or Injury
The health issues don’t stop there. Vocalist Elton Muropa has also been off the stage for several months due to illness, while Lucky Mumiriki, once a key performer in the group, has never fully recovered after a stroke he suffered in 2011. Although he showed signs of recovery, Macheso revealed that the stroke hit him again.
“There is also Elton Muropa, who has been ill for some time now. We just hope and pray that he recovers and joins the rest of the team. At one point, we thought Lucky Mumiriki had recovered, but stroke yacho yakabva yamurova futi. It’s something that always gets me worried,” said Macheso.
Another member, Taurai “Ponda Ponda” Miti, has been wheelchair-bound since a road accident in 2020. Despite the long list of health setbacks, Macheso continues to offer financial and emotional support to his bandmates, even those like Mumiriki who haven’t performed in over a decade.
