City of Joburg’s Margaret Arnolds to name chairperson of metro’s new independent investigation committee

City of Johannesburg Council Speaker Margaret Arnolds is set to announce the chairperson of the metro’s new independent investigation committee on Sunday morning.

Sunday’s council sitting will look into allegations of maladministration and corruption in the metro’s group forensics and investigation services department.

In March last year, senior officials from the department were suspended pending an investigation.

Riddled with allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption, the metro’s finances have come under the spotlight in recent months.

Newly appointed Council Speaker Arnolds is set to announce the chair of the team put in charge of investigating allegations levelled against the city’s internal investigating unit.

The appointment comes from a report tabled in the council which revealed investigations conducted by the unit were not compliant with local government disciplinary regulations.

The report promoted the metro’s council to dissolve the board with the department’s responsibilities bestowed to city manager, Floyd Brink.
