Dynamos Star Elton Chikona Could Be Deregistered And Stripped Of PSL Award For Age Cheating

Dynamos star Elton Chikona risks being deregistered and stripped of a PSL award over allegations of age cheating.

Chikona and Herentals FC player Leon Daka are under investigation.

Chikona and Daka had travelled to Malawi with the Young Warriors for the four-team tournament. The tourney features Malawi, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe. However, ZIFA expelled the two from the camp for “breach of protocol.”

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) announced:

“Elton Chikona (Dynamos FC) and Leon Daka (Herentals FC) have been released from the U20 men’s national team training camp and were unable to accompany the team to Malawi due to breaches in team protocols. While this situation is regrettable, ZIFA considers it a vital disciplinary measure in its efforts to instil a new team culture characterised by respect for coaches and teammates and a strong commitment to discipline.”

Sources at ZIFA spoke to H-Metro and whispered that ZIFA axed Chikona and Daka because they failed age eligibility tests. Dynamos and Herentals registered the two players with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as juniors, a slot meant for five developmental players under 19.

PSL spokesperson Kudzai Bare clarified that the PSL is familiar with the allegations. If the PSL Disciplinary Committee finds the two guilty, it will deregister them from the PSL. Chikona will also lose the Castle Lager Premiership Rookie Of The Year award, which he scooped last year.

Bere reiterated:

“We are aware of Daka and Chikona’s issue, but at the moment, our hands are tied because our decision should not be inspired by mere speculation. We are not ignoring anything, but if they are found guilty of age-cheating, PSL will respond to the matter as soon as possible.”
