Cape Town water crisis: These parts to be hit hard by a 9-hour shutdown

The City of Cape Town has announced planned maintenance that will leave several areas without water for up to nine hours.

The first phase of maintenance begins on Monday, 14 July. Residents are urged to plan ahead and use water wisely.

SOME AREAS SET TO FACE WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTIONS

Saxonsea, Avondale, and Robinvale will see major disruptions. From 8:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday, 15 July, these areas will have no water.

The City will install new water mains and carry out critical rehabilitation work during this time.

Residents in Saxonsea, Avondale, and Robinvale should store water in advance to minimise inconvenience.

Kirstenbosch will also be affected. A City-appointed contractor will test shut off the water main in Bishopscourt.

This test will happen between 10:00 and 14:00 on Tuesday, 15 July.

A full shut-off will follow on Wednesday, 16 July, from 9:00 to 16:00.

This step is essential to add a new connection to the existing water infrastructure.

During these periods, water will be unavailable in Kirstenbosch Drive, St Albans Close, Riverside Road, and nearby areas.

GLEN GARRY RESERVOIR TO CLOSE FOR MAINTENANCE

The Glen Garry Reservoir will undergo maintenance from Monday, 14 July, until Friday, 15 August 2025.

This shutdown is part of the City’s annual cleaning and maintenance plan.

It ensures Cape Town’s water supply remains safe and of high quality for residents.

During this period, water will be rerouted through alternate pipelines, but pressure may drop.

The Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant and Blackheath Water Treatment Plant will work together to support the Tygerberg Reservoir.

Residents in affected areas should expect lower than normal water pressure until maintenance is complete.

PLAN AHEAD AND STAY INFORMED

The City urges all residents to stay updated on these planned disruptions.

Store enough drinking water and reduce unnecessary water use during these periods.

Residents can visit the City of Cape Town’s website for real-time updates and further details.

By cooperating, everyone helps maintain a safe and reliable water supply for the city.
