Tragedy As Two Men Killed In Explosion While Warming Themselves By The Fire At Mazowe Mine

They Were Just Keeping Warm: Mine Explosion Kills Two In Zimbabwe

Two men have died in a horrific explosion at a mine in Mazowe, Zimbabwe, while they were simply warming themselves around a fire.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the blast occurred at Kwayedza Investments Mine on Thursday, 11 July 2025. One man died instantly at the scene, while the other died later at Concession Hospital due to the injuries sustained.

The victims were not engaged in any mining or suspicious activity at the time of the incident.

They Were Just Warming Themselves

Police confirmed that the men were not inside the mine or conducting any underground work when the explosion occurred.

In an official statement posted on X, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said:

“Police in Mazowe are investigating circumstances surrounding a tragic explosion at Kwayedza Investments Mine on 11/07/25. The incident resulted in the deaths of two men who were warming themselves around a fire when the explosion occurred.”

They added:

“One victim died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries upon arrival at a hospital in Concession. More details will [be] released in due course.”

Investigations Underway

The mine, located in the gold-rich Mazowe district, has not yet issued a public comment. It is unclear what exactly triggered the explosion, or whether any mining activity had recently taken place in the area where the fire was lit.

Police have not released the names of the victims, pending identification and notification of next of kin.

There is growing concern in the community about safety protocols at mining operations, especially with informal workers and locals sometimes using mine premises for shelter or warmth.

Community In Shock

Locals from nearby villages expressed shock at the news, with many taking to social media to share their condolences.

“It’s heartbreaking. These were just ordinary people trying to keep warm. They didn’t deserve this,” wrote one resident.

Mazowe has seen several mining-related accidents in recent years, but this particular case has stood out because of the circumstances — the victims were not working, but merely sitting by a fire.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the explosion to come forward as investigations continue.
