Harare Liquor Stores Warned: Obey the Law or Face Closure

Harare Liquor Stores Face Raids: Council and Police Unite to Stop Illegal Alcohol Sales

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have issued a stern warning to liquor store owners in Harare’s CBD. Many of these establishments have been accused of flouting their operating licences by staying open until midnight instead of the mandated 8 pm.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the behaviour of these outlets is under serious scrutiny.

“Police have noted with concern a number of liquor outlets dotted in the CBD who are closing later than the stipulated time on their operating licences,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He added, “We are urging the liquor outlet owners to observe the time stipulated on their operation licences. Let those violating these specified times not cry foul when police make raids.”

Harbouring Criminals and Selling to Minors

Residents and authorities alike have expressed dismay over the state of affairs. Commissioner Nyathi highlighted troubling activities linked to these outlets.

“Some liquor outlets have been harbouring criminals by closing very late against their licences,” he said.

He further condemned the sale of alcohol to minors, stating,

“Liquor outlets owners have the legal and social responsibility to protect children under 18 years of age by not allowing them to be in their outlets.”

A Harare resident shared their frustration, saying,

“It’s a mess of a situation because the streets have been turned into public toilets. Cars park in the middle of the streets, blasting music, and even underage boys are buying alcohol.”

Harare Council Steps In

Last night, Harare City Council officials conducted a raid on these liquor stores, finding many still operating well past 8pm.

Stan Gama, a council spokesperson, confirmed,

“We told the owners they have to abide by what their licences say. We will liaise with the police to ensure the city is not turned into a beer-drinking jungle.”

Gama also revealed that the council is investigating how some of these establishments were licensed.

“We are determined to restore order. These outlets are disturbing the peace and must comply or face closure.”

The Liquor Licence Board has reiterated that liquor stores are takeaway shops, not venues for on-premises alcohol consumption.

Tougher Action Expected

Authorities have warned that tougher action will be taken against those who continue to defy the regulations. Under the Liquor Act, the police are empowered to seize alcohol and shut down non-compliant outlets.

Commissioner Nyathi was clear: “We will not hesitate to enforce the law to protect the community.”
