Zimbabwe Police Uncover Disturbing Trend Behind All Cash Heists
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has made a worrying revelation—every single cash heist in the country so far has involved an inside job. In nearly all cases, employees have been found to be the source of leaked information, whether intentionally or unknowingly.
This comes after a major breakthrough in the US$4 million Ecobank cash heist investigation, which has further highlighted the growing problem of employee betrayal in high-stakes environments.
According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the risk of robbery increases sharply when large sums of money are involved. He said police investigations have consistently found that criminals are getting their information from people within the affected companies.
“Through our investigations, we have discovered that it often comes down to a trend where employees share information, sometimes willingly and at other times without realising the consequences,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi said the problem is especially rampant in businesses that routinely handle large amounts of cash, such as banks, supermarkets, mines, and Cash-In-Transit (CIT) companies. He warned that the temptation for employees to feed criminals information in exchange for a cut is often too strong to resist.
He pointed fingers at security companies in particular, saying many of the culprits in these cases are employed in the private security sector.
“To avoid hiring individuals with criminal tendencies, these companies must carry out thorough background checks. It is, therefore, the responsibility of each company to ensure that all employees are properly vetted to prevent criminal activity,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He urged all businesses to take internal security seriously and ensure that every employee is properly vetted before being trusted with access to money or confidential information.
Nyathi concluded that the ripple effects of insider-led heists are serious, both financially and in terms of public trust, and stressed that prevention must begin with companies creating a culture of accountability and transparency.
