Harare Woman Fears for Her Life as Husband Threatens to Kill Over Lobola Refund

A Harare woman is living in fear after her husband demanded a refund of the lobola (bride price) he paid for her, threatening to shoot and kill her if she does not comply.

The matter came to light when Dephine Maregedze approached the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order against her husband, Moses Musapatika.

Allegations of Abuse and Threats

During her testimony, Dephine Maregedze revealed to the magistrate that her husband has been making serious threats against her life.

“My husband always threatens to shoot me with a gun if I do not pay him back the money he used for my lobola,” she stated.

Dephine Maregedze disclosed that her husband, specifically threatened to kill her if she attempts to file for a divorce. Maregedze also recounted how Musapatika frequently demeans her, telling her that she does not deserve him and that he did her a favor by marrying her

Maregedze also detailed the physical abuse she has endured, explaining that she is living in a very abusive relationship.

He abuses me by hitting and slapping me frequently,” she said.

Husband Denies Allegations, Claims He Opposed Separation Proposal

In response to the allegations, Moses Musapatika vehemently denied ever threatening to shoot or kill his wife.

I have never threatened to shoot my wife with a gun,” he asserted.

Moses Musapatika claimed that the idea of separation was initially suggested as a proposal. He emphasized that he was clear about his desire to avoid taking that path, indicating that he did not want their relationship to end in separation.

The separation came as a proposal, and I made it clear that I did not want us to go down that route.”

Court’s Decision

After hearing the testimonies, Magistrate Meenal Narotam granted Dephine Maregedze’s request for a protection order
