Twenty-one learners from Marhagi Secondary School in Verena, Mpumalanga, have been rushed to the nearest clinic after complaining of stomach cramps. Others were later transferred to KwaMhlanga Hospital. The Mpumalanga Department of Education says preliminary reports indicate that the learners consumed atchar bought from vendors outside their school.
The department’s spokesperson Gerald Sambo says, “We can confirm as the department that we received the report that indicates that there’re about twenty-one learners who were rushed to the nearby clinic after they complained of stomach cramps of which they suspect that they might have been caused by the atchar that they bought from street vendors who sell food for the learners. The leaners were rushed to the clinic and will be transferred to hospital where they will conduct some tests.
