Our #MCM today is James Mushore, a highly accomplished entrepreneur and seasoned business executive with a demonstrated history of excellence in the financial sector. He is best known for founding and leading NMB Zimbabwe Holdings Limited as its Group Chief Executive Officer.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Mushore’s educational path began at St Michael’s prep school in Borrowdale, thanks to the kindness of a Catholic Priest who recognized his potential. He later attended St George’s College, where he excelled academically and in field hockey.
Mushore’s professional journey commenced in the UK, where he studied Business Studies. He then joined an accounting firm in Zambia, becoming the second black partner. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, he worked in financial services in London.
In 1989, Mushore returned to Zimbabwe to co-found NMBZ with Bishop Julius Makoni and other partners, including Francis Zimuto. Their vision was to establish the country’s first black-owned bank, providing premium financial services to elite customers. Despite facing discouragement, they secured a banking license in 1993. NMBZ became the first black-owned bank and the largest merchant bank in Zimbabwe within 18 months.
Under Mushore’s leadership, NMBZ pioneered corporate finance consultancy and played a pivotal role in listing CBZ and the Econet IPO. His emphasis on merit-based hiring and effective HR policies drove the bank’s success. As a trailblazer in Zimbabwe’s financial sector, James Mushore’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
