Alleged underworld crime boss, Nafiz Modack, and his 14 co-accused will be back in court on Tuesday in a mammoth trial centred around racketeering and the murder of top cop, Charl Kinnear.
Modack and his co-accused are implicated in 124 crimes while running a criminal empire which led to the murder of Kinnear in September 2020.
Last week, proceedings put a spotlight on the alleged extortion of money from a luxury car dealership, called The Toy Shop, in Cape Town.
Defence attorneys for the accused will this week cross-examine State witnesses who presented evidence of millions paid to Empire Investment Cars, an apparent front company previously owned by Modack’s brother, Yaseen Modack.
The State’s evidence showed statements from a former manager of the Toy Shop, Mark Misdorp, who said that more than R4 million was extorted from the company.
Another State witness, Anwa Gallie, a former associate of Modack’s from Johannesburg, said he transferred more than R3 million to Empire Investment Cars on behalf of Modack from his personal bank account.
Gallie’s bank statements presented in court showed the money he transferred came from The Toy Shop.
The trial continues.
