The Nyanga community policing forum (CPF) is calling on Minister of Police Bheki Cele to come up with a plan of action to fight crime.
According to the Nyanga CPF, the Imbizo initiative has been around for a long time but the crime situation in communities hasn’t changed.
This comes as the police top brass, including Cele, are expected to host an Imbizo in Linge Primary School, in Nyanga, on Wednesday.
More than 300 community members have gathered at the Linge Primary School to raise their issues about crime in their area.
The Nyanga CPF said the minister must come up with a new strategy to address increasing crime levels in townships.
According to the forum, there’s been no change in the crime situation in Nyanga since the last Imbizo in 2021.
Nyanga CPF secretary Duminsani Qwebe said revealed that crime had worsened: “We have been [addressing] these issues for so long. The important thing now is to say to the people, ‘we heard your outcry, here is the plan of action, and we are going to do ABCD in order for you as the community to be in safer places’.”
Nyanga is one of the crime hotspots in the Western Cape, and has in the past been a murder capital in South Africa.
