In a frightening turn of events last week, Engelbert Rugeje, a senior member of the Zanu-PF politburo and a retired military general, barely avoided what could have been a catastrophic car accident.
According to reports from sources within the ruling party, the mishap occurred in the Mt. Pleasant region when Rugeje’s vehicle suffered a critical mechanical failure, causing it to veer dangerously off course.
Narration of the accident by eyewitnesses
It was reported that the incident happened due to the front wheel detaching from Rugeje’s car while he was driving, creating a hazardous situation on the road. This caused the retired general to lose control of the motor vehicle, almost becoming fatal.
Witnesses state that the vehicle was only prevented from flipping over due to a collision with nearby rocks, which, though damaging, averted a more serious outcome. Rugeje was left visibly shaken but managed to escape with minor injuries.
Photographs of the heavily damaged vehicle have been circulating, starkly highlighting the dangerous nature of the crash. The retired army general refused to comment when asked about the accident.

Rugeje’s Political and Military Legacy
Engelbert Rugeje has had a storied career in Zimbabwe’s military and political spheres. He previously held the position of Chief of Staff in the Zimbabwe National Army, eventually ascending to the rank of Lieutenant General before transitioning to his role within the Zanu-PF political establishment.
His appointment as the party’s national political commissar came shortly after his retirement, but this position has seen several changes over recent years. Rugeje’s tenure as political commissar was cut short in 2019 when war veteran Victor Matematanda assumed the role.
