Limpopo nurse shot outside Lebowakgomo Hospital! The Democratic Nursing Union of South Africa (Denosa) in Limpopo has called on the police to investigate the tragic fatal shooting of a nurse outside Lebowakgomo Hospital.
The nurse, identified as 52-year-old Mumsy Seribishane, was killed after getting off a taxi near the hospital gate on Tuesday night.
The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow within the healthcare community, highlighting the broader issue of violence targeting essential workers.
The provincial spokesperson for the Department of Health in Limpopo, Kapudi Moagi, confirmed the details of the event. According to Moagi, Seribishane, who worked as an enrolled nursing assistant in the female surgical ward at the hospital, was shot just a few meters from the hospital entrance as she was making her way to work.
The assailant allegedly approached her directly and shot her on the spot before fleeing the scene. Authorities are yet to determine the motive behind the killing, and no suspect has been apprehended at this stage.
Lesiba Monyaki, the provincial chairperson of Denosa, expressed deep sorrow and anger over the incident, describing it as a devastating loss for the healthcare sector.
“Denosa is shattered, devastated, and saddened by these barbaric acts. This country, and Limpopo in particular, cannot afford to lose a nurse during these critical moments of staff shortages and an increased demand for quality healthcare,” said Monyaki.
He emphasized the urgent need for a thorough investigation and justice for the slain nurse, urging law enforcement to prioritize the case and ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice. In addition to calling for an investigation, Monyaki stressed the importance of community vigilance in preventing such tragic events.
He urged local residents to report suspicious activities or potential threats to prevent future incidents. “We urge the community to report this type of incident before they occur because someone might have known what was going to happen, and it could have been prevented,” he said.
The killing of Seribishane has also drawn condemnation from Limpopo’s MEC for Health, Dieketseng Mashego, who expressed both outrage and sadness at the loss of a dedicated healthcare professional.
Mashego spoke of the critical role that nurses play in the healthcare system and called on the community to unite against violence, especially violence directed at those who work tirelessly to serve others.
“Nurses are essential to our healthcare system, working tirelessly to serve the needs of patients and their families. The loss of this dedicated professional is not just a tragedy for her family, but a loss for our entire healthcare community,” said Mashego.
She extended her heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Seribishane, acknowledging the immense grief they are facing. “My thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this devastating loss,” she added.
Mashego also emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of healthcare workers, who are often vulnerable as they commute to and from work, particularly in areas that may not have adequate security or police presence.
She expressed confidence that law enforcement would act swiftly in investigating the murder and ensuring that justice is served. “I have no doubt that law enforcement will prioritize this investigation and bring the perpetrator to justice swiftly. We must ensure the safety of all healthcare workers in our province,” she said.
This tragic event comes amid ongoing challenges in the healthcare system, including staff shortages and the increased demand for medical services. Losing a frontline worker like Seribishane, especially in such a violent manner, compounds the strain on an already overburdened system.
As investigations continue, the healthcare community and local authorities will need to work together to ensure that such incidents are not repeated, and that those who dedicate their lives to helping others are adequately protected.
For now, the focus remains on bringing justice for Seribishane and offering support to her grieving family and colleagues.
