Intervention by ZRP Boss to Aid Officer with Disabled Child

In a heartwarming turn of events, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) boss Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga has stepped in to prevent the forced resignation of a dedicated police officer, Constable E. Chitembetembe, who merely sought a transfer to be closer to his disabled child.

This action was in response to a public outcry over the harsh treatment and apparent lack of empathy shown by the officer’s superiors.

Official Response to Social Media Outcry

Following the uproar on social media, Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi issued a statement, saying,

“The Commissioner-General of Police has taken note of the viral social media post regarding Constable Chitembetembe of ZRP Siakobvu’s urgent family welfare issue.

“The public is accordingly advised that Commissioner-General Tandabantu Godwin Matanga has immediately corrected the anomaly and directed the ZRP’s Human Resources Department to ensure that the member’s family welfare is prioritised.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police thanks everyone who raised concerns over this issue.”

The Officer’s Circumstances

The intervention came after Constable E. Chitembetembe requested a transfer to be closer to his disabled child, Donald Chitembetembe.

Part of the letter, posted on social media, stated:

“The member is seeking a transfer from ZRP Siakobvu to any station in Kadoma District to monitor his child, who was placed at Rubatsiro Zimcare Trust in Kadoma by the Ministry of Education in 2021.

“Furthermore, the child’s mother was recently appointed as a teacher in Kwekwe, approximately 250 kilometres from Kadoma.

“Both parents having been posted out of Kadoma, the child, enrolled at Rubatsiro Zimcare, no longer has parental care—a situation not conducive considering the child’s needs.”

Superior’s Harsh Response

In an appalling response to Chitembetembe’s heartfelt plea, the Officer Commanding Mashonaland West province issued an ultimatum: resign within 24 hours or remain at the distant post.

“Member to retire on 24-hour notice or stay at Chalala Post. Choose any of the two options.”

This directive drew sharp criticism for its lack of compassion and understanding of an officer’s family obligations.
