2 Bodies Found in Norton Spark Fears of Ritual Killings
The people of Norton have been left shaken after the gruesome discovery of two bodies in Katanga this week, with growing fears of ritual killings or even a serial killer in the community.
Both victims were well-known local residents.
On August 25, the body of 40-year-old Patrice Chipaumire was found along a footpath near Knowe-Katanga Road. Police reported that he had a deep cut on the throat, flesh missing from his right cheek, and his left arm and genitals mutilated.
Less than 24 hours later, a second body, that of Jack Gedion, was found in a similar condition nearby.
The two killings have raised alarm across Katanga, with many residents fearing that someone may be targeting people for ritual purposes.
Local legislator Richard Tsvangirayi described the events as among the darkest moments in the town’s recent history. He expressed his sorrow and sent condolences to the bereaved families, saying the community shares in their pain and mourning.
“I share in the deep sorrow and shock these events have caused. My heartfelt condolences go to the families who have lost their loved ones under such painful circumstances,” Tsvangirayi said in a statement on Wednesday. “Please know that your grief is our grief, and you are not alone during this time.”
The MP said he had personally visited the families to comfort them and promised that his office would continue to stand by them as the case unfolds.
Tsvangirayi stressed that the killings must not go unanswered and vowed to push for accountability. He revealed that he had already spoken to the police, who have launched full investigations into the deaths.
He said justice must not only be done but also seen to be done, adding that authorities should not rest until the perpetrators are caught.
“Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done. We will not rest until answers are found and those responsible are held accountable,” he said.
The legislator also urged police to step up security in Katanga, including more patrols, to restore calm and protect residents. Locals have also been calling for street lighting in the area to reduce risks.
Acknowledging the fear that has gripped the community, Tsvangirayi encouraged residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary movement at night. He said while fear is natural in such a time, it is important for people to remain united, support grieving families, and stay calm as investigations continue.
“To the people of Norton, I urge you to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary movements during late hours. While fear and uncertainty weigh heavily on us, let us not lose our sense of community. Let us watch over one another, support the grieving, and remain calm as investigations unfold,” Tsvangirayi urged.
