Justice Served: 20 Years For Attempted Rape In Bindura
A Bindura man has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars after his attempt to rape a pregnant woman was spectacularly foiled when she cleverly lured him into a trap.
Robert Sebastian, 39, of Withington Farm, was handed the hefty 20-year prison sentence by the Bindura Regional Magistrates Court on 28 March 2025. The conviction stems from a harrowing incident that occurred on 7 August 2025. A 21-year-old expectant mother was walking alone to the Foothills Clinic for a medical check-up when her path crossed with Sebastian’s.
The Terrifying Ambush And A Cunning Plan
After a simple greeting, the situation turned sinister. Sebastian followed the woman, grabbed her jacket, and violently dragged her into nearby bushland. He tripped her, forcing her to the ground, and attempted to rape her. It was in this moment of extreme peril that the quick-thinking complainant conceived a daring plan to save herself.
Fearing for her life and the life of her unborn child, she managed to convince her assailant that a more comfortable location was preferable. She told him they could “enjoy the act” at her home, claiming she lived alone. Seemingly convinced, Sebastian agreed to follow her, unaware he was being led directly to his own capture.
A Trap Is Sprung By A Husband And Neighbours
The walk to her home was the longest of her life. Upon arrival, the woman immediately alerted her husband and neighbours. Together, they swiftly apprehended the would-be rapist. Sebastian was subdued and handed over to the police, his freedom ended by the very trap he had been tricked into walking towards.
During the subsequent trial, the court heard compelling evidence. This included the powerful testimony of the brave complainant and the physical evidence of her clothing, which was torn during the initial struggle in the bush. This evidence proved crucial in securing the conviction.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe stated the sentence sends a powerful message. They said:
“This conviction demonstrates that the justice system will impose tough penalties on those who prey on women and vulnerable persons.”
The authority also praised the community’s role, urging continued cooperation with law enforcement.
“Communities are urged to continue working with law enforcement by reporting crimes quickly, so that offenders are held accountable and public safety is protected.”
