A 50-year-old man from the Mberengwa district is now facing two decades behind bars following his conviction after he raped a 90-year-old grandmother. The sentence which has been applauded by many Zimbabweans set an example of the consequences that will be faced when one commits a heinous crime.

According to a detailed report from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the assailant approached the victim’s home on the evening of June 11, 2025.

Under the cover of darkness, he knocked on her door and deceptively identified himself as her grandson in a bid to gain entry. Displaying admirable presence of mind, the elderly woman recognised that the voice did not belong to a family member and courageously refused to open her door.

Undeterred by her refusal, the perpetrator resorted to extreme violence. He forcibly broke into her bedroom, physically overpowered the nonagenarian, and pushed her to the floor. The NPAZ stated that he then proceeded to assault her without consent sexually. Despite her brave efforts and cries for help, no one was nearby to intervene during the traumatic incident.

The following morning, the survivor managed to alert a neighbour, who immediately assisted her in contacting local authorities and filing an official police report.

The subsequent investigation and prosecution led to the lengthy 20-year prison sentence. The NPAZ, which operates with a mandate focused on combating crime and corruption, publicly commended the conviction. They emphasized that such a decisive ruling sends an unequivocal message that acts of gender-based violence and attacks on the most vulnerable members of society will be met with the full, unforgiving force of the law.
