Eight people lost their lives after a Dragon bus tried to overtake a haulage truck into oncoming traffic before crashing near Mutendi Complex, along the Mutare–Masvingo Road. Police confirmed the accident happened in the early hours of 30th August 2025.

Police confirm the accident

In a press statement released on 30th August 2025, the Zimbabwe Republic Police detailed how the crash happened.

Quoting from the statement, police said:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 246 kilometre peg along Mutare-Masvingo Road, near Mutendi Complex, on 30th August 2025, at around 0200 hours.”

The statement explained that the bus, which had 20 passengers on board, had been travelling from Beitbridge to Mutare.

“A motorist who was driving a Dragon bus with 20 passengers on board from Beitbridge to Mutare attempted to overtake a haulage truck laden with timber while there was an oncoming vehicle. Upon noticing the oncoming vehicle, the bus driver swerved back to his lane and sideswiped the truck, causing the timber to pierce into the bus.”

According to police, the accident left the driver and seven passengers dead at the scene, while four more people were injured.

“As a result of the crash, eight people, including the driver, died on the spot, while four others were injured.”

Victims taken to hospital

The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo General Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Those injured were admitted to the same hospital for treatment.

Police confirmed this in the statement:

“The bodies of the victims were referred to Masvingo General Hospital for post-mortem examination, while the injured were referred to the same institution for treatment.”

Authorities highlighted that most of the crashes recorded between Friday and 30th August 2025 were linked to unsafe overtaking.

The statement ended with a warning to drivers:

“It is sad to note that most of the accidents recorded between Friday and today were caused by overtaking errors on the part of drivers. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should exercise extreme caution on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so.”
