The ZRP has disclosed concerning road accident statistics from the recent Independence Day and Easter holiday period. Law enforcement authorities reported a significant increase in traffic accidents compared to the previous year’s holiday season.
ZRP Show Alarming Rise In Road Accident Statistics
Police records indicate 384 total road incidents during the 2025 holidays, marking a substantial jump from 286 cases during the equivalent timeframe in 2024. While fatal accidents decreased slightly from 26 to 21, and road deaths dropped from 27 to 24, injury cases climbed from 159 to 178 victims.

Among the most severe incidents occurred at noon on April 21 near the 51km marker of the Harare-Bulawayo highway. A Toyota Hiace minibus carrying 18 passengers lost control, veered off the roadway, and overturned. The catastrophic collision resulted in four fatalities (three immediate and one hospital death) with 14 injured survivors transported for medical care at Norton Hospital.

Authorities Concerned About Hit-and-Run Epidemic
The ZRP highlighted three alarming hit-and-run cases:
- April 19, Mutoko-Chidye Road: An unidentified motorcyclist struck a pedestrian near the 57km post before fleeing. The victim later succumbed to injuries at Mutoko Hospital.
- April 20, Harare-Bulawayo Road: An unknown vehicle killed a male pedestrian at the Tynwald overpass, with the driver failing to stop.
- April 20, Whitehouse Area: A Nissan Caravan struck and killed a 66-year-old man near Puma service station. The driver continued without assisting the victim, who died at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Police Urge Motorist Responsibility and Compliance
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the ZRP spokesperson, emphasised legal obligations for drivers involved in accidents:
“All motorists must immediately stop, provide first aid assistance, and report collisions to authorities.”
The police force reminded road users that vigilance and strict adherence to traffic laws remain essential for preventing unnecessary loss of life.
