Chinhoyi Man Killed After Dispute Over 50 Cents Change
What started as a simple disagreement over 50 cents in change tragically ended in death after a violent altercation between two men in Chinhoyi.
The suspect, Moreblessing Sekerani (28), appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate Nyasha Marufu, who remanded him in custody while he remains admitted at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital with head injuries.
The victim was identified as Jimmy Makiwa (28) of Witchwood Farm.
According to court proceedings, on April 15, 2025, Makiwa visited Sekerani’s shop where he bought groceries and a beer using a US$10 note. He later returned around 5 pm, asking for his change.
Sekerani reportedly told Makiwa that his change was just 50 cents — a response that sparked an argument.
Tempers flared. Makiwa allegedly began damaging shop property, including a speaker and a chair, leading Sekerani to close for the day.
While heading home, Sekerani realised he was being followed by Makiwa, who allegedly began throwing stones at him.
Feeling threatened, Sekerani decided to detour to his nephew’s place at Plot 2, Witchwood Farm, where he explained what had just happened.
His nephew, Chinyani, agreed to accompany him back home for safety. But when they arrived, they found Sekerani’s bedroom door had been vandalised.
The two began repairing the damage, unaware that things were about to take a fatal turn.
A Knife Fight Turns Deadly
While they were busy fixing the door, Makiwa suddenly appeared — dressed only in shorts. Without warning, he hit Sekerani on the head with a stone.
He then pulled out an okapi knife and allegedly tried to stab Sekerani. A violent struggle broke out, during which Sekerani managed to wrestle the knife from Makiwa.
In what appears to have been a desperate act of self-defence, Sekerani stabbed Makiwa twice in the chest.
Makiwa collapsed on the spot. Sekerani fled the scene and went to Glenamel Farm, where he turned himself in to a man named Cephas Chiombera. He reportedly told Chiombera everything that had happened.
The two returned to the house and found Makiwa’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood.
A report was filed at ZRP Chinhoyi Rural. CID Chinhoyi later joined and attended the crime scene.
Officers discovered a broken door and window, blood stains on the bedroom floor, and Makiwa’s body lying face up with deep stab wounds to his chest.
Sekerani, who had suffered a deep head wound and cuts on his fingers during the fight, was taken to the hospital and later charged.
A postmortem is yet to be conducted, and police investigations remain ongoing.
