Blessed Mhlanga Bedridden as Health Worsens Behind Bars
Prominent NewsDay journalist Blessed Mhlanga is reportedly unwell and bedridden in prison, two months after his arrest on charges linked to his interviews with exiled war veteran Blessed Geza.
Mhlanga was arrested on 24 February and charged with two counts of sharing messages alleged to incite violence or property damage. The charges stem from interviews he conducted with Geza, which authorities claim crossed the line.

Blessed Mhlanga Falls Sick Behind Bars
Despite spending nearly two months behind bars, Mhlanga has not stood trial and remains in custody after being denied bail. Authorities say investigations are still ongoing.
On Thursday, 24 April, his employer Heart and Soul TV took to X (formerly Twitter) to raise alarm over his deteriorating health. The post read:
“Word from prison is that @bbmhlanga is unwell and has been bedridden for two days. Freedom- what freedom? For 59 days @bbmhlanga has been in prison with no trial. Bail has been denied, the state says still conducting investigations. We can’t afford to be silent or to lose hope. Speak out share your views.”

Not the First Health Scare
This isn’t Mhlanga’s first health scare while incarcerated. In March, his lawyer Chris Mhike revealed that the journalist had developed a fever, which left him weak and in poor health. Mhike said:
“He was complaining of a fever today; So, he is not at his best in terms of his health but he remains strong and brave even if he is not well physically.”
