WATCH: Divine Lunga Helps Mamelodi Sundowns Book CAF Final Spot
Zimbabwean international Divine Xolile Lunga turned out to be Mamelodi Sundowns’ secret weapon, helping the South African giants avoid a heartbreaking exit from the CAF Champions League.
Mamelodi Sundowns secured a spot in the final after drawing 1-1 with Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly on Friday evening. Thanks to the away goals rule, Sundowns progressed after a goalless draw in the first leg played in Mzansi.
Brought on in the 79th minute, Divine Lunga made an immediate impact. His cross led to the crucial equaliser that sent Sundowns to the finals.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, it looked like Sundowns’ dream was slipping away. But in the 90th minute, Yasser Ibrahim accidentally deflected Lunga’s cross into his own net, giving Sundowns the all-important away goal they needed.
This dramatic equaliser booked Masandawana’s place in their third CAF Champions League final — and their first since lifting the trophy back in 2016.
Al Ahly had taken the lead early, with Taher Mohamed smashing a powerful shot past Ronwen Williams in the 23rd minute. Sundowns struggled to find rhythm in the first half and went into the break looking second best.
But persistence paid off. And thanks to Lunga’s late heroics, Sundowns, who had been knocked out at the semi-final stage in the last two editions, are now just one step away from continental glory again.
