Position Overview

The World Bank is seeking a highly motivated Economist to join the EP team in Harare, Zimbabwe. Reporting to the Practice Manager (EAEM1), you will play a key role in monitoring Zimbabwe’s macroeconomic developments and contributing to analytical and operational work. You will collaborate closely with the Senior and Lead Economists for Zimbabwe and support the broader East Africa EP team.

About the Economic Policy Global Practice

The Economic Policy (EP) Global Practice leads the World Bank Group’s efforts in macroeconomics, fiscal policy, trade, competition, and investment. By supporting Ministries of Finance, Trade, Economy, and Planning, EP helps countries implement reform agendas that strengthen inclusive, private sector-led growth. The Zimbabwe EP team specifically focuses on macroeconomic analysis, fiscal reforms, debt sustainability, and capacity-building efforts, providing cross-sectoral insights vital for the country’s development strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to macroeconomic monitoring, economic analysis, and preparation of policy briefs.

  • Apply economic and financial models and tools to assess Zimbabwe’s economic trends and support policy advice.

  • Support the preparation and implementation of lending operations, when required.

  • Maintain macroeconomic databases and develop updated medium-term economic projections.

  • Contribute to major economic reports including the Zimbabwe Economic Update, Country Economic Memorandum, Country Climate and Development Report, Public Finance Reviews, and Macro Poverty Outlook.

  • Assist in monitoring Performance and Policy Actions under IDA’s Sustainable Development Finance Policy.

  • Engage actively in policy dialogue with government counterparts, development partners, the private sector, and academic institutions.

  • Support the Country Management Unit (CMU) in implementing the World Bank’s Zimbabwe program.

Selection Criteria

  • Education: Master’s degree (minimum) or PhD (preferred) in Economics.

  • Experience: At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in economic analysis and policy advisory roles.

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Strong grasp of macroeconomic theory and policy issues, especially fiscal and monetary policies.

    • Experience in debt policy and management is an advantage.

    • Proficiency in econometric and statistical software (e.g., STATA, E-Views) and Microsoft Office.

  • Knowledge of Zimbabwe: Deep understanding of Zimbabwe’s economic landscape, government structures, and local networks.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and persuasively.

  • Personal Attributes: High integrity, initiative, results-oriented, strong team player, and ability to thrive in a multicultural environment.

Technical Proficiencies

  • Robust ability to conduct macroeconomic analysis and translate findings into actionable policy recommendations.

  • Ability to conceptualize cross-sectoral linkages and apply economic models to inform decision-making.

  • Capacity to work on a range of policy issues, including debt, trade, fiscal reform, and growth strategies.
