Sharks Head Coach John Plumtree Reveals Why Eben Etzebeth Missed United Rugby Championship Match Against Ulster
Sharks head coach John Plumtree has revealed the reason why Eben Etzebeth was a late withdrawal from the United Rugby Championship (URC) match against Ulster.
The veteran Springbok lock was set to captain the side but was unable to play.

Coach Plumtree Speaks on Eben Etzebeth’s Condition
Initially expected to lead the side again, Etzebeth was withdrawn just before the match.
Speaking to Premier Sports, John Plumtree revealed that the veteran Springbok lock fell ill during the week and never fully recovered.
“Eben got sick in the earlier part of the week and never really recovered, just got worse. So disappointing but Siya takes over and he is not a bad skipper.”
Plumtree also revealed that the team had prepared for the possibility of Etzebeth missing the game and hoped for a swift recovery.
“He didn’t train yesterday. I was a little worried about it last night and we made the call late. We had everything prepared for the worst case so here we are,” Plumtree added.
Eben Etzebeth Injury
Eben Etzebeth sustained a head injury during the Sharks’ victory over Exeter Chiefs in an Investec Champions Cup pool match last year. The veteran lock has been battling concussion symptoms, which have repeatedly delayed his return to the field.
In February, the Sharks provided an injury update stating that Etzebeth had experienced a recurrence of concussion symptoms.
Early in March, Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus emphasized the importance of not rushing Etzebeth back into action.
Erasmus also revealed that he had consulted a “concussion guru” to better understand and manage the ongoing issue.
