ZESA Reveals Why Load Shedding Has Worsened Again

Outrage as ZESA Blames Hwange Fault for Increased Load Shedding

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has revealed why load shedding has worsened again.

ZESA says a technical fault at Hwange Power Station is the reason why load shedding has become more severe across the country.

ZESA Reveals Why Load Shedding Has Worsened Again

In a statement released on Sunday, 4 May, the power utility confirmed that the problem had reduced the amount of electricity available, forcing them to increase load shedding for all customer groups. However, ZESA did not explain how serious the fault was or which parts of the station were affected.

“ZESA Holdings would like to advise its valued stakeholders of a technical fault that occurred at Hwange Power Station, resulting in the reduction of available power supplies. This unforeseen incident has necessitated increased load shedding across all customer groups,” part of the statement reads.

They also didn’t say when the power supply would return to normal, but claimed their technicians were working on it and promised to fix the issue “within the shortest possible time.”

“Our technical team is working to rectify the problem and restore normal operations within the shortest possible time. The inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted,” ZESA said.

But the vague update only raised more questions. Some Zimbabweans demanded details about what exactly went wrong, while others dismissed the explanation, suggesting ZESA is simply using the fault as a convenient excuse.

Here are some of the reactions:

@AbelTsiga:

The fault happened on which unit? Did it happen on the units always under scheduled maintenance?

@violenceislife:

Mxm, it’s winter. We know the drill, not that there’s any difference, but we just know how you do things.

@Dr_Tom_TM94:

Excuses all the time. We have been having 18 hours of load shedding per day since 2022. At first, you said the water levels at Kariba Dam were too low. What’s really going on, and how can the civilians help?

@collinvance13:

Technical fault or not, hapana difference.
