Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana has responded to online chatter about a photo showing President Emmerson Mnangagwa appearing to fall asleep during a formal luncheon in Russia.
Mnangagwa Attends Russia’s Victory Day Celebrations
The Zimbabwean leader is currently in Moscow for the 80th Victory Day celebrations — a major event marking the Soviet Union’s win over Nazi Germany in World War II. He joined 29 other world leaders for the high-profile commemorations.
Mnangagwa received a warm welcome at Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport from Russia’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister for Africa and the Middle East, Mikhail Bogdanov, as well as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Russia, Mark Grey Marongwe.
He is accompanied on the trip by key officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Professor Amon Murwira and Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube. Zimbabwean media is also present, with political editor Kuda Bwititi.

As part of keeping the nation updated, Information Secretary Nick Mangwana has been posting photos and updates from the trip. One image he shared sparked attention online; it showed Mnangagwa seated among other leaders at a table, his head slightly bowed and eyes closed as though he was dozing off. Mangwana simply captioned it:
“80th Anniversary of Victory Day.”
Social media users were quick to react. One user, @Blecharaz, commented:
“And he’s even sleeping whilst others are concentrating Mr Nick, you are hyping him coz he’s seated between white people
”
Mangwana fired back, brushing off the criticism:
“You really think he slept at a luncheon? You really have a problem”
