From Poland To Mberengwa: Beloved Gynaecologist Who Transformed Zimbabwe’s Healthcare Dies At 84

How a Polish doctor became a Zimbabwean healthcare hero

Dr Edward Tadros, a Polish-born gynaecologist who dedicated more than three decades of his life to Zimbabwe’s public health sector, has died. He passed away on April 22 at the age of 84.

His journey from Poland to rural Zimbabwe left a lasting legacy.

“Dr Tadros was a beacon of humanity in medicine,” said a fellow doctor at Chitungwiza Central Hospital.
“He gave his life to this country and touched thousands of lives.”

From Poland to Mberengwa

Dr Tadros graduated in 1969, specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 1991, he made the life-changing decision to leave Europe and settle in Zimbabwe.

He began his work at Musume Hospital in Mberengwa — a remote rural area often overlooked by medical professionals.

“He never acted like he was better than anyone else. He lived among the people,” said one local nurse.
“He delivered babies in the middle of the night and never asked about money.”

Two years later, in 1993, he joined Chitungwiza Central Hospital. There, he worked tirelessly for decades, eventually rising to the post of clinical director.

“He didn’t just treat patients, he trained us. He mentored an entire generation of doctors,” said a junior doctor.
“His door was always open.”

Tributes pour in

The medical community has described his death as a huge loss.

“Dr Tadros was a model of ethical, people-centred healthcare,” said a senior health ministry official.
“He strengthened trust in our public hospitals and reached communities many had given up on.”

Even outside the hospital, Dr Tadros was known for his humility.

“He would walk into a village, greet elders, and sit with expecting mothers under trees,” one former patient recalled.
“He made you feel seen.”

Dr Tadros is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Many say his work will live on through the patients he healed and the doctors he trained.

“He may have been born in Poland,” said one mourner at the hospital, “but Zimbabwe was his home.”
